Why are there houses on stilts?

In the UK, people often live in brick houses with two floors and a garden.

In the USA and Australia, people's houses are often made of wood from trees.

In some countries, the houses are very different. Is there a reason for this?

People in North Africa and southern Europe started to live in underground houses a long time ago,

Underground houses kept them safe from enemies - people who wanted to hurt them - and the hot sun.

Today in Adelaide, South Australia, some people still live in underground houses that miners.
